Walmart launched a pilot program on Wednesday for on-demand delivery in cooperation with Flytrex, an end-to-end-drone delivery company. Inhabitants of Fayetteville, North Carolina, are able to have select grocery and household essential items delivered straight from the Walmart store to their house. The hexacopters are automated and can be controlled over the cloud from a smart and easy to use dashboard. The drone will hover over the desination target and lower a grocery bag down using a hoist, waiting for the customer to detach it. Walmart doesn’t expect millions of deliveries quickly, but expects to use this pilot program to teach them about autonomous delivery vehicles, similarly to their work with Gatik, Ford and Nuro. The company hopes the pilot will help shape the potential of aerial drone delivery on a larger scale.
